Professor Hugh Beale will receive the honorary title of Professor and Doctor Honoris Causa from ELTE University’s Senate on 11 May 2018. Professor Beale is an expert in European contract law and commercial law.  

Prior to his receipt of this honorary title, Professor Beale will deliver his speech entitled “1973–2019: Has the UK’s membership of the EU had any lasting impact on either English or continental general contract law?” on 10 May 2018. 

Professor Beale is a Professor of Law at Warwick University since 1987. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College and holds a Visiting Professorship at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was appointed an Honorary Queen’s Counsel in 2002.
From 1987-1999 he was a member of the Commission on European Contract Law and he co-edited the treatise entitled “Principles of European Contract Law: Part I & II (2000). He was a member of the Study Group on European Civil Code and was heavily involved in the preparation of a draft Common Frame of Reference, apart of the European Commission's Action Plan of a European Contract Law. He was also a member of the Expert Group that advised the European Commission on the proposed Common European Sales Law.
Professor Beale was the leading British coordinator of the “Hungarian-British Joint Academic Research Programme” and contributed to the committee in charge of reforming the Hungarian Civil Code from 2002 to 2004.
