Main research areas
My fundamental and defining research topic is non-discrimination legal regulation and its functioning in Hungary. Previously, I specifically addressed the issue of access to goods and services provided by private service providers, analyzing its Hungarian case law.
I have previously dealt with the general issues of legal consciousness and the broader question of the social impacts of law. The methodological and theoretical lessons from these investigations have been incorporated into my current and planned research topics.
Critical legal theory is a legal theoretical approach that applies insights from left-wing social theory to analyze the legal system, legal institutions, and legal practices. The approach emphasizes that law is politics, in contrast to other approaches that assume the relative autonomy of the legal system concerning its relationship with politics. Another crucial aspect of the approach is the assertion of the indeterminacy of legal interpretation and the critical analysis of legal language use. I consider the insights of Critical Legal Studies (CLS) to be of fundamental importance in interpreting the relationship between minority groups and the legal system. Since this is a less known approach in Hungary, it would be important to facilitate its reception, for example, through translations, secondary analyses, and my research in this area is aimed at this.
Research on legal professions cannot be considered extensive in Hungary, and even within this scope, there is minimal data on the differences between men and women in various legal careers. Considering that the activities of legal professionals are inherently intertwined with legislation and legal application, especially judging, the presence, forms, and prevalence of gender discrimination can negatively affect not only those involved but also be a significant societal issue. My research in this area aims to map out gender discrimination in the legal professions. On the other side of the coin, canonical figures in legal professions are almost exclusively men. It would be essential to explore the lives and careers of outstanding, influential female legal professionals, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the representation of women in the field of law.
The legal institutions related to the restricted legal capacity of adults, such as guardianship and supported decision-making, represent entirely different approaches regarding how to assist individuals living with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), specifically in Article 12, calls for a paradigm shift in this area, as States Parties commit to phasing out legal solutions based on substitute decision-making. This is a challenge that no legal system has been able to fully meet so far, including the Hungarian. The focus of my research in this area is on how these legal institutions function in practice and shape the everyday lives of the individuals affected by disability.
Legal sociology is a field that adopts its research methods from general sociological methodologies, although often in an ad-hoc manner. In the field of legal sociology, there are no well-established methodological manuals or guides. My research goal in this area is to acquire comprehensive methodological knowledge and research experience, and to review and process the peculiarities of legal sociological methods.
Since the beginning of my teaching career, I have been concerned with the teaching methods of legal education and the possibilities for methodological innovation in this field. In addition to acquiring knowledge elements, legal education also encompasses the development of skills and attitude formation, and I am engaged in exploring methods related to these aspects.
